Abstract

The author describes some aspects of the socio-political atmosphere, everyday life, and mentality of Ukrainians in the second half of the 20th century from a hermeneutic perspective. Based on this description, an interpretation of the axiological dimension of Volodymyr Shynkaruk’s (founder of the Kyiv anthropological school) philosophical work is proposed. Unknown or little-known facts of his biography are interpreted as life foundations that set the direction of his philosophical searches. According to the author, V. Shynkaruk was, in terms of his personal value orientations and way of life, a romantic in the cross-cultural sense of “romanticism” as a universal attitude towards man, society, and nature inherent in different eras. V. Shynkaruk created a romanticized version of neo-Marxism. At the same time, the content of his activity was the revival of Ukrainian philosophy as an integral part of the European discourse.
